Sweet Temptations

Dessert Tables are such a phenomenal success at weddings, especially with the exquisite design presentations by  Amy Atlas leading the trend, Desserts at weddings have gone way beyond the wedding cakes.

So how can this tie in to the South Asian scene... well lets see, Mithai or South Asian Desserts (also known as Sweet meats) are the equivilant of a champagne toast in western culture. So any business deal, family success, setting the date for an event, buying a home, birth of a child, high school graduation, promotion at the job (you get the idea) is marked with sharing Mithai with loved ones.

The concept of sharing Mithai is commonly heard in the Urdu and Hindu sentence 'Mun meetha karna' or literally to sweeten the mouth.

At most Muslim weddings, as soon as the Nikah (religious ceremony) is completed, little pouches of goodies are distributed amongst all guests. Usually these pouches will contain dryed dates, sugar coated almonds, sweet fennel and rock sugar (Misri). The theme once again is we are sharing our joy by sweetening your mouth at this auspicious moment!

Now, with Dessert tables making statements at both mainstream and South Asian weddings, how lovely would it be to display different kinds of Mithai instead of cupcakes and chocolate truffles? With hundreds of flavors and styles of Mithai ranging from the Vibrant yellow Mooti Choor Laddu, to the melt in your mouth Bengali Ras Gullay, the toasted sesame rewari to the velvety Pistachio Burfi, the nutty goand kay laddu to airy  Batashay  an exquisite arrangement  can be made showcasing a variety of flavors, textures and aromas. Proper labels and ingredients will help novice mithai enthusiasts know both the content (to avoid any possible nut allergies) and will help them refer to a particular kind, later on, with a name rather than just 'Indian sweets'

Talk to your caterer and see if they will work with you on this or let Saffron Affairs create the Mithai Dessert table of your dreams to fulfill the sweet tooth of all your guests at your most special event!

Saffron Affairs at ISES

Saffron Affairs was represented by founder and Aesthetic Director Saman Ansari and coordinator event productions Farha Jafri at the East Meets Tex, an ISES Austin Chapter event on November 16th 2010 at the Fortune Chinese and Seafood restaurant.

The event was organized immaculately by Red Velvet Events, moderated by the eloquent Tacy Infante of Meritage Events, Chinese Asian Culture was presented by Cindy Lo and Saffron Affairs presented the essence of South Asian Culture and weddings.

An introduction by Saman Ansari was followed by a presentation by Farha Jafri on the Cuisine, Religions, Music & dance, Beauty & Attire and the combination of these factors and their culmination at different South Asian Weddings.

The floor was then open to questions from the audience primarily professionals from the wedding industry and the interactive Q & A session was a welcome success thoroughly enjoyed by all as Saman Ansari has been a professional public speaker, TV anchorperson and Radio moderator!

There is so much to acknowledge, learn and understand in the South Asian culture and Saffron Affairs will continue to participate in educational events to help the mainstream market familiarize the essence of one of the oldest, most exotic and highly coveted cultures of the world.
